London-Day 1

Today we arrived in London after a 9 hour flight from Seattle and through Iceland. We left Umatilla at 7:30 AM on Friday, January 11 and arrived in London at Heathrow Airport at 11:30 AM Saturday, January 12th after circling in the sky above London 4 times to wait for landing space. It took us over an hour to get through customs and we checked into the hotel around 2:00 PM. We couldn’t waste a day so we dropped off our suitcases and set out.

We are staying a couple blocks west of Westminster Abbey so we walked in that direction and viewed it from the outside. We also walked through Parliament Square where 12 statues of prominent people from history line the perimeter.

We then made our way to the Portobello Road Market- the world’s largest antique market. We walked  over a mile of Portobello Road lined on both sides by shops and also tents set up in the street. We purchased some old Letterpress letters and a tray from a vintage printing shop stamped Caslon York and London. The tent was operated by a man who was a typesetter and his son.

While exploring the market it began to drizzle and many of the shops closed up, so we headed to King's Cross Station. We wanted to make sure to get a picture of the train station and Platform 9 3/4 for William. Thomas has been reading him Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone so we knew it would be something that he'd like to see. We were even able to FaceTime him while we were there so he could see it live on video.

We had an amazing first day and can’t wait to explore Stonehenge, castles, and the English countryside tomorrow.
