Sip & See

Today we had a sip and see and Pearl got to meet many friends and family for the first time. My mom and my friend Christy organized the whole thing and it was beautiful.

Pearl has Arrived!

After waiting three days past her due date, Pearl decided to join our family on Tuesday, July 17 (of course, it would be an odd numbered day since I love even numbers). Her birth was quick and exactly how I had hoped it would happen.

I woke up with contractions about 4:30 AM. I timed them for about a half hour or so and they were about 8-10 minutes apart. I woke Thomas up around 5:00 and told him I felt like we should head to Pendleton. I didn't feel ready to go in to the hospital, but after the close call with Henry I didn't want to push my time now that we live about 45 minutes away.

He popped out of bed and said, "Now, you walked a lot yesterday and it was hot-- have you drank water?" I told him yes and that I thought these contractions were different. I'd had so much false labor with her and had gone to the hospital on July 2 thinking she was going to make her arrival that night, only to be sent home after drinking water and becoming hydrated.

We left home for Pendleton around 5:30 and arrived to Pendleton about an hour later. I sat in the car until about 6:45 at which point I decided I should just go in since I would be more comfortable not in the car. I checked in and went to triage. At 7:00 I was 5 cm dilated, so I was officially admitted. Around 7:20 I moved from triage to a birthing room. Dr. Brunsman arrived about 7:40 and checked my dilation again-- I was at a 9. He told me that I needed to make it through a couple more contractions and then I would be ready to push. At that point he broke my water (which didn't result in much since Pearl was so low and was blocking most of the fluid behind her).

After two more contractions, I pushed and Pearl was born at 7:50 AM.

She was able to lay skin to skin with me for a little over three hours and was a great nurser. Thomas waited so patiently to hold his little girl. She weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Pearl is truly a miracle we found out after her birth. She had velamentous cord insertion. This resulted in about an 8 inch section of her main veins/arteries not being covered and protected by her umbilical cord and it's Wharton's jelly. This is very dangerous and can often result in a stillbirth if one or more of the veins is ruptured during the birth. Even though she was here and safe at the time I learned about her cord, I could hardly even think about it. It took me several days before I could even look up the condition online to learn about it. I can't even imagine a different outcome and I am so thankful for the angels who I know were watching after her and helped her arrive here safely.

After the nurse got Pearl dressed Thomas looked at me oddly. I said, "Yes, she put it on backwards." When the nurse left, Thomas helped her out and turned it around. Here he is buttoning the tiny button on the back of the gown.

Grandpa Bucky brought Pearl a very special gift on her big day-- a pair of Pearl earrings that belonged to her Grandma Pat.
